Cleaning Pipes and Bongs

For people who are just getting into cannabis and the different delivery forms, there can be an often overlooked component to the practice: cleaning. There are many methods that a person can try to consume cannabis, from topical, oral, and inhalation.

Besides cleaning your dishes after making cannabutter, inhalation has the most extensive cleaning process required of the delivery methods. Cleaning your pipes, bongs, and vapes is crucial to ensure you are having the safest and most pleasant experience with your cannabis.

Cleaning a pipe

Cleaning a pipe is crucial to not only having a clean smoking experience but ensuring that the smoke is smooth. Pipes can easily get backed up with resin and ruin your smoke, but cleaning can easily remedy this. Before you begin, you should gather a few materials to keep the process running smoothly.

  • Plastic bag or container that can be sealed
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Table salt
  • Dish soap

First, make sure you shake out all of the excess flour from the last time you smoked out of the bowl and pipe. You only want the resin to be what is being cleaned out of the pipe. Then add your rubbing alcohol to your bag and place your pipe inside.

Now add about a tablespoon of salt to your bag (if you are using a container, there is no point in doing this step). The salt is gritty, so it should help you get to those hard-to-reach spots in the pipe. A coarser salt will help a lot more than a finer salt, especially if you haven’t cleaned your pipe in a long time.

Now you should let your pipe soak for between 12 and 24 hours. During this time, the rubbing alcohol will begin to chew away at the resin inside your pipe.

After the allotted time, you can shake your bag to help get the resin out of the inside of the pipe. DO NOT do this with a container. If you are using a container and don’t mind getting a little messy, you can move the pipe around vigorously in the container with your hand. This will help to avoid damaging the pipe on the sides of the container.

After it appears like most of the resin has been removed from the bowl, and inside the pipe, it’s time to clean it. Use hot soapy water to clean the pipe completely. There is a possibility that there is some resin still clinging to the inside of your pipe. You can try to remove this with a cotton swab, and it should come out with no problem. Make sure that you let the pipe dry fully before using it again.

Cleaning a bong

There is more to cleaning your bong than just removing the water after every session (yes, every session). You have probably noticed that the inside of your bong’s pipe and bowl are not nearly as clean as they used to be. The materials you need to clean your bong are very similar to cleaning your pipe with a few additions.

  • Two large plastic bags that can be sealed
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Table salt
  • Dish soap
  • Recommended: bong plug

First things first, remove the stem from the bong and place it in a plastic bag. The last thing that we want is to shake the bag later and have the two glass pieces collide with one another. Make sure there is no dirty water in the bong before you start cleaning.

Fill the bag with rubbing alcohol and sea salt. Remember that the coarser the sea salt, the more gritty it will be, which will be helpful in removing excess resin from your bong and bowl. You will leave the stem in the bag with rubbing alcohol for about 12 hours. After the time has elapsed, shake the bag and take it out to dry.

For the bong, there are items called bong plugs that you can use to plug up your bong after you place the rubbing alcohol in it. What the plugs will do is make it easier to shake the bong with the rubbing alcohol inside. If you have a smaller bong, you can get away with using your fingers to plug the two holes but be careful not to make a mess.

Fill your bong with rubbing alcohol, plug the holes, and shake. Once all the resin has been removed, you can drain the rubbing alcohol through the stem of the bong. Make sure to rinse all pieces of your bong with hot soapy water. Cotton swabs can help to remove any last remnants of resin in your bowl or bong.

Let it dry, and you will be ready for your next smoke.

Final Thoughts

It is imperative that you are taking the time to clean pipes and bongs to ensure that you are having a safe smoking experience. Implementing regular cleaning into your week will prevent any last-minute issues with your pipe or bong.
